Description/Notes:

Assist the school principal in overall administration of instructional programs and campus level operations in a manner that supports a learning environment that maximizes the potential of each student.  Coordinate assigned student activities and services.  Have an overall understanding of elementary curriculum and its effectiveness on student success.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Instructional Management

    • Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs, with an emphasis on elementary education.

    • Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.

    • Promote the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.

    • Serve as the District’s textbook coordinator.

  • School/Organizational Climate

    • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.

    • Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.

    • Communicate effectively with students and staff.

    • Create, maintain and support a learning environment that is academically, emotionally, and physically safe.

  • School/Organizational Improvement

    • Commit to prepare students for their future by building relationships, promote learning that is rigorous and relevant, and develop each student’s unique talents and skills.

    • Participate in development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.

    • Help Principal develop, maintain, and use information systems to maintain and track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.

  • Personnel Management

    • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences.  Serve as first appraiser for 50% of teaching staff.

    • Assist Principal in interviewing, selecting and orienting new staff.

  • Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

    • Embrace shared leadership and collaboration with administrative staff and teachers.

    • Supervise operations in Principal’s absence.

    • Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.

    • Serve as the Administrator on duty at extracurricular activities.

    • Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with the attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.

    • Requisition supplies, textbooks and equipment, check inventory, maintain records and verify receipts for materials.

    • Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.

    • Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other support services.

    • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.

    • Coordinate the District’s Special Programs working alongside district diagnostician, 504 coordinator and counselor.

  • Student Management

    • Ability to make decisions based on what is best for students.

    • Treat students, parents and community members with respect.

    • Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.

    • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.

    • Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students and teachers.

    • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

    • Embrace and promote cultural diversity on campus and in the community.

    • Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing its mission.

    • Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.

    • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with the Principal.  Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel, and others as assigned.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

    • Maintain emotional control under stress.  Work with frequent interruptions.  Occasional travel for extracurricular activities/programs; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

 

Qualifications:
  • Education/Certification:

    • Master’s Degree Required

    • Texas Assistant Principal or other appropriate certificate required

    • Certified T-TESS appraiser

  • Special Knowledge/Skills:

    • Thorough understanding of curriculum, instruction and student learning, with an emphasis on elementary curriculum.

    • Thorough understanding of school operations.

    • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to coordinate campus support operations.

    • Understanding of special programs.

  • Experience:

    • Three years’ experience as a classroom teacher preferred
